Bow Drill Friction Fire can be seen as the cornerstone of Bushcraft. If you are able to make fire without the use of modern methods and materials then you've bridged the gap between the modern world and our ancient ancestors. It's not known when the bow drill was first used in making fire however, we know that it was used as a drilling tool in Mehrgarh between the 4th and 5th millienium BC. It was used to drill holed into lapis Lazuli and carnelian stone.
There are two main challenges in Bow Drill Friction Fire. Firstly, materials have to be correct. They need to be the right woods, seasoned correctly and cut and shaped properly. Secondly, The technique have to be perfect. Body position, applied pressure, bow speed all have to be right to get an ember to form. Get any of this wrong and Bow Drill quickly becomes an exhausting and disheartening practice. You then need to go through the process of problem solving. We know from discussion from clients, this can set learning back months, sometimes even years. Our aim is to make Friction Fire accessible to more people.
Buying a Bow Drill Friction Fire set guarantees that the materials are correct. Each set is tested to ensure that it works. Everything is cut and shaped perfectly to make Bow Drilling easy and enjoyable. Our booklet guides you through gaining perfect technique. There is also an in depth problem solving section that will help you iron out problems and issues encountered.
Our aim is to get you enjoying Bow Drill Friction Fire successfully. We also run Fire Lighting courses and can do Private Workshops if you wish.
Bow Drill Friction Fire Kit includes:
- Drilling spindle.
- Bearing Block.
- Hearth Board.
- Instruction Booklet.
Each set is individually harvested from our woodland, shaped by hand without using power tools and tested.
Please note we have seen kits for sale that are pine boards and dowel rods from hardware stores. They do not work. The rods crush way too easily under pressure. The boards also compress instead of burning in. We have also seen badly shaped sets making it even more challenging to make fire. The booklet will explain these issues, why they happen, how to avoid or overcome them.
